âWell? What do you have to say for yourself?â Morgana stood, in her office, tapping her foot, holding my mobile phone and charger in one of her hands.
I opened and closed my mouth a few times, my mind racing to settle on an acceptable excuse. Iâd left it in my bedside table drawer when Iâd gone to take a shower. How did she know I had it? âI tried to return it to the post office box but I got⦠delayed.â It sounded so lame. The truth was, I couldâve returned it. But Iâd prioritised bashing out my anger in the gym over taking the phone back to the post office.
âThat is the worst excuse Iâve ever heard. Do you even fully understand why these devices are banned? This is the most destructive type of human technology. Electromagnetic waves pulsing through our atmosphere, interfering with magical energy. Frankly, Iâm embarrassed that this happened on my watch.â
My chest deflated and I looked at the floor. âIâm sorry. Look, I know Iâve messed up. But I wonât do it again.â
She arched an eyebrow. âItâs too late for that. This type of misdemeanour could be grounds for suspension. And Iâm tired of hearing you say youâre sorry. When are you going to grow up and start taking this training seriously?â
This was the worst roasting sheâd given me yet. I bit my lip and held my breath, praying that she wouldnât suspend me.
âYouâre lucky that Conor has already spoken to me on your behalf and begged me to be lenient. You owe him a debt of gratitude.â
Oh great. Conor was the last wizard I wanted to be indebted to.
She glared at me. âYou are forbidden from leaving the Arcane Academy grounds for one week.â
I gasped. This was catastrophic. If I couldnât leave the grounds, I wouldnât be able to work on Phoebeâs case. Including today, we only had four days left to find Phoebe and work out who was responsible. Weâd made scant progress so far. I had to get Morgana to reconsider.
Putting on my most angelic expression, I ratcheted up my toadying to one hundred and ten percent. âThank you Grandmaster. That is so very kind of you.â I dipped my head while flicking my eyes up to study her reaction.
Her expression remained the same. This was going to be tough.
âThe thing is Grandmaster, me and my coven were hoping to go back into Vaden and wipe out the rest of that group of vampires who tried to kill me.â
She flicked one of her hands, dismissively. âAlready dealt with. A group of adepts is heading out there tomorrow night.â
I fought to keep my expression neutral as I tried again. âBut I would really appreciate a chance to be involved. Given what Iâve been through itâsâ¦â
âNo.â She spoke the word as a complete and final sentence.
Damnit! If only I could ask her to postpone my grounding until Thursday afternoon - the end of Grandminister Davenportâs deadline for us to solve the case. But if I did that sheâd want to know why.
